With a couple references, it would be a B. Could use a lot more information, though.

Discussion
[edit]How do you think that the public looked at Cicely Tyson through this paragraph? I think she is an extraordinary woman. boo! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.16.5 (talk) 00:15, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
The top of the wikipedia page is incorrect. She was never married to Billy Dee Williams. I can't edit, otherwise I would do it. JohnnyRelentless (talk) 13:03, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Deity?
[edit]The opening paragraph describes Ms. Tyson as a "goddess". Can someone expand on that and tell me exactly what spiritual realm she controls? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.24.25.146 (talk) 17:55, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- That's simple...the realm of Hopes and Dreams and the indomiable Human Spirit. 76.218.248.127 (talk) 19:47, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Birth date
[edit]The New York Times is reporting that as of June 10, 2013, Tyson is 88 years old. See http://theater.nytimes.com/2013/06/11/theater/theaterspecial/a-landmark-tony-awards-season-for-black-actors.html?ref=arts (June 11, 2013).
Since most websites say that she is 79, I asked the Times about it. The newspaper told me it has "proof" from birth records that her age is 88, that it has checked with Tyson, and that she does not dispute it.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.139.160.34 (talk) 19:27, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
- That's fine, but until they publish the "proof" and Tyson's acquiescence, it's rumor or allegation, precisely because every other source lists 79. If the NYT wants to establish 88 as fact, publication is necessary, and not a casual mention in a news feature.Sensei48 (talk) 20:46, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
A valid citation is needed to document her birth date. --Crunch (talk) 16:14, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- I cross-checked the birth date information for Cicely Tyson with other sources (such as city directories and U.S. government documents), which showed December 19, 1924 as her published birth date. However, her father's naturalization petition showed Cicely's birth date as December 18, 1924. That, you know, is a discrepancy of a day between her published birth date and her birth date provided in her father's U.S. naturalization petition. So...the birth date in the article will need to reflect this information (December 18 or 19, 1924), referring to her father's U.S. immigration record. SOURCE: In the matter of the petition of William Augustine Tyson to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States of America, Petition No. 248743 (S.D.N.Y., Jul. 31, 1935; granted Jan. 27, 1936)→Lwalt ♦ talk 22:03, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

There's a Sicely Tyson listed as 163 days old in the 1925 New York State census, which would result in a birth date of December 19, 1924: "New York, State Census, 1925," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KSMP-44Q : accessed 12 Jun 2013), Sicely Tyson, 1925.
- That "Sicely Tyson" is listed as male and is named "son" of the household. I don't see anything indicating "163 days old", either. Quis separabit? 16:02, 12 June 2013 (UTC)
- Although "Sicely Tyson" was listed as a male in the 1925 New York State Census, that had to be an error in recording the person information by the census enumerator. I reviewed the 1925 New York State Census (no birth date info was provided in that record for Cicely Tyson aka Sicely Tyson), in addition to records from other sources, such as the 1940 U.S. Census showing 16 year old Cicely in the household of her mother Frederica Tyson and naturalization records for Cicely's father (see also the response above for the information that I picked up from her father's petition for naturalization). Based on the documents that I reviewed, the information in the 1925 NYS Census corresponded with names of family members listed in naturalization petition for Cecily Tyson's father (parents' names William and Frederica and the names of their children at the time of the petition -- Cicely and her siblings Melrose (older) and Emily (younger)). Therefore, this 1925 NYS Census record provides a reasonable reference to Cicely Tyson, in spite of the errors in the gender and absence of the birth year in the census record. →Lwalt ♦ talk 22:03, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
And a Cecily Tyson listed as 16 years old in the 1940 United States federal census: "United States Census, 1940," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KQTL-QWY : accessed 12 Jun 2013), Cecily Tyson in entry for Fredrickson Tyson, 1940. The 1925 census lists parents William and Fredrica, both born in the British West Indies in 1897-1898, and an older brother, Melrose, born in New York in 1921-1922. The 1940 census lists mother Fredricka, older brother Melrose, and younger sister Emily. Do these names match up with what is known about her family? If so, the censuses would indicate she's 88 years old as of June 2013. Public records indices available on Ancestry.com also list Cicely Tyson with a birth date of 19 December 1924. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.120.231.207 (talk) 03:27, 12 June 2013 (UTC)
- Well, I am not sure if Ancestry.com is usable as RS on Wiki, but the census data surely is. Clearly, we cannot do synthesis on Wikipedia, but if there is a single RS that lists parents and sibling, then the census data should be enough to go on.Sensei48 (talk) 04:56, 12 June 2013 (UTC)
- Records of the United States government and state governments are considered primary sources of information in most cases. In these cases, the source is cited to the U.S. record, with a reference to the repository where you retrieved the record citation (e.g., Ancestry.com or NARA as publisher). The records from commercial repositories, such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, come U.S. and state sources, among others, and these records are indexed for public use (many of the images of the sought after records are behind a paywall, particularly on Ancestry.com, while the index for these imaged records are freely available in several places). →Lwalt ♦ talk 22:03, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
- Given that the overwhelming majority of sources indicate she was born in 1924, not 1933, I will update lede and infobox accordingly. I had been wary of doing so for fears of OTRS complaints or vandalism. I was willing to leave it as disputed but given the totality of the evdience and the young whippersnappers breathing down my back who would no longer tolerate any delays that were getting to harder to justify I had to change it to 1924. Sorry, Cicely. Quis separabit? 23:27, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Updated the birth date to "18 or 19 December 1924"; added a citation to the article for the father's immigration record that refers to the birth date for Cicely Tyson; and updated the second citation to mention that her father's naturalization petition showed Cicely's birth date as December 18, 1924. →Lwalt ♦ talk 23:48, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

I like the article and i think its cool but the only thing about is that is does not give enough information as it would with any other article. Liljessi 16:34, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Marriage to Billy Dee Williams
[edit]It says she was married to Mr. Billy Dee Williams from 1957 to 1966, with 2 citations from Ancestry.com which can’t be accessed without a subscription to them. However, Williams’ Wikipedia article statesman he was married from 1959 to 1963 to a different woman and has no mention of Ms. Tyson. Ivan Zarco (talk) 11:05, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, this points to the major shortcoming of Ancestry, which is that it can be pointing to different people with the same names. I have an Ancestry subscription and I'll try to look into that. Coretheapple (talk) 21:22, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Drama Desk awards
[edit]Cicely Tyson was at least twice the winner of the Drama Desk awards, once in 2013 and once in 1962, which I believe was prior to it being called the "Drama Desk."
